Stress Management Therapy:
“Stress happens when you think you have to figure out everything all at once. Breathe. You’re strong. You got this. Take it day by day.”
Domestically nearly 89% of our population is suffering from stress or chronic stress, and more than 75% of these people do not feel comfortable in talking to psychologists well versed in stress management counselling.
What is chronic stress?
Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure suffered for a prolonged period of time in which an individual perceives they have little or no control. It causes the body of an individual suffering from it to stay in a constant state of alertness, despite not being in danger. It may cause both mental and physical harm such as disturb the immune, digestive, cardiovascular, sleep, and reproductive systems.
Some of the most common symptoms of patients in need of stress management counselling are as follows:
- Anxiety or depressive behavior
- Short temper and irritability
- Social isolation
- Headaches and difficulty in concentration
- Skin problems
- Panic attacks
The roots of chronic stress which warranted stress management counselling vary on an individualistic basis but are often centred around a few common topics such as work space and conflict with co-workers, familial conflicts, death of a loved one, medical diagnosis and more.
What is stress management counselling?
Every individual experiences some degree of stress, however certain people are not able to cope on their own and need help with the same. Stress management counselling uses a wide spectrum of techniques and psychotherapies, (occasionally combined with medication) which are customized on an individualistic basis to cater to the needs, interests and problems of every patient.
The counselling aims at controlling a persons’ stress levels with the purpose of improving the said individual’s daily functioning capabilities.
Psychologists well versed in such sensitive treatments often suggest individuals to compartmentalize their lives in order to help reduce stress levels. They also help patients identify the basic cause or the root the problem and give them various concrete techniques to practice in daily life in order to cope with the stress they are facing in a much healthier manner as compared to their previous routines of avoidance and suppression of one’s emotions and feeling leading to mental breakdowns and outbursts.
Stress management counselling also uses behaviour therapy and alternative therapies as tools occasionally to great patients suffering from chronic stress or unhealthy levels of stress. Psychologists and therapists often recommend exercising, yoga or taking up new hobbies as healthy outlets for working through stress and the impact it has on an individual, especially mentally.
Nonetheless, at the end of the day what is important to remember is that with the right treatment any person can learn to relieve their stress and live more enjoyable lives.
